The MFA show takes place off-campus at the Glue Factory – an unusual space which students have utilised every part of, including the girls' bathrooms, where multimedia artist Elina Bry @elle.bry hums a tune from within the walls. #andegreeshowtakeover by @fk.art ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's hard to capture everything going on at GSA's MFA show, and near impossible to describe it, so here are my final three picks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Nastia Nikolskaya's wood and tarpaulin sculptures, while unassuming from the outside, offer an unexpected moment of intimacy and reflection to the viewer once inside. Jaxton Su @jaxtonjx creates mesmerising kinetic sculptures inspired by natural phenomena that weave their own subjective narratives. Kathryn McKenna uses prescription pads and an 18-month planner to illustrate the NHS' failures of treating the mentally ill. My advice for anyone visiting? Plan for a break! With well over 100 students showing work across Fine Art Photography, Sculpture & Environmental Art and Painting & Printmaking, it's easy to get fatigued attempting it all in one go. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thankfully, if you feel like you need to take a seat, Georgia Thornton Sparks is here to help. #andegreeshowtakeover by @fk.art ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Allegra Salandini’s @allegrasalandini solo work is well worth seeking out, but picking up a copy of “Love Letters to An Institution” is absolutely essential. The publication collects submissions from Salandini’s fellow graduates, reflecting on the stretching of school resources and overcrowding of year groups that has been the topic of much protest in recent years. Walking round the Tontine Building today, it’s clear why. The number of students in the Fine Art show alone is incomprehensibly large, and so much fresh, exciting, insightful, powerful work ended up lost in the shuffle. It’s obvious that GSA has something special going on, and it would be a great loss to see it supressed by institutional greed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Glasgow School of Art Degree Show runs until Friday the 8th of June, and the MFA show at The Glue Factory until Sunday the 10th.
